Marina Melis and Ed Koopman founded Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire in 1993 to care for sick, injured, and orphaned donkeys on the island. The sanctuary aims to provide a safe and protected environment for the donkeys while raising awareness in the community. Currently, over 400 donkeys receive food, water, medical care, and space at the sanctuary. The ongoing work of Donkey Sanctuary Bonaire remains essential.

How to get around Bonaire...

Because of the close proximity of the cruise piers to Kralendijk, walking is unquestionably the ideal method to discover this charming and small Caribbean capital. It is convenient and cost-effective to explore further on the island, whether it's for a day at one of the numerous secluded beaches or to uncover the attractions of the island.

Taxis are affordable, well-maintained, equipped with AC, and conveniently located near the exit gates of both the Northern and Southern Piers.

Since the cruise ship docks near Kralendijk, there is no need for a shuttle. Bonaire doesn't have Public Buses, but there are private services that might be challenging for cruise travelers to navigate.

Car, scooter, and bicycle rental

Travelers interested in leisurely exploring the island can consider renting a car, scooter, or bicycle. Any of these options offer fun and independence. Car rentals, scooters, and bicycles are easily accessible on foot from both piers. Note that driving is on the right, and the island does NOT have traffic lights. The speed limit is 25 mph (40 km/h) in towns and 35 mph (60 km/h) outside urban areas.

Water taxi to Klein Bonaire

For those wanting to discover Klein Bonaire (a top spot for scuba diving and snorkeling), water taxis are conveniently located within walking distance of the piers.

Tips for booking third-party excursions:

Booking third-party excursions can be a great way to save money and enjoy a more authentic experience, but there are a few things you need to consider when booking:

  • Look for a "Back-to-Ship Guarantee".
  • Read the cancellation policy carefully and make sure you will be refunded if the ship does not make it to that port for some reason.
  • Make sure you understand where to meet & when, and how to get there.
  • Double-check to make sure the tour times work with your time in port.

We recommend booking through specific suppliers we work with regularly, as all of their options are purposefully

made to fit within the timeframe of your cruise ships schedule, that specific day in port. Please let your LV Travel

Co Designer know if you are interested in seeing these options, and they will send over their specific link.
